Pre-IPPT Health Screening (HSP) Explained

The SAF Health Screening Programme, or HSP, is a mandatory medical check for IPPT-eligible NSmen aged 35 and above, required every year before they can attempt IPPT or NS FIT. You’ll only be cleared to test if you receive a Low Cardiac Risk result. Without a valid HSP certificate for the year, the NS Portal won’t let you book IPPT, and your unit will initiate the HSP process once your window opens.
What Is the HSP and Why Does It Exist?
I get this question every year from trainees who hit 35 and suddenly find their IPPT booking blocked. The Health Screening Programme is MINDEF’s medical screening system, designed to catch health conditions early before someone attempts strenuous physical activity like IPPT.
It isn’t unique to NSmen. Regular servicemen go through it at 25, 30, and 35, then yearly after that. For IPPT-eligible NSmen specifically, it becomes mandatory at 35 and continues yearly until 45.

Who Needs to Complete HSP Before IPPT?

If you’re an IPPT-eligible NSman and you’re 34 turning 35 within your training block, don’t be surprised when your unit reaches out about HSP. It isn’t optional, and skipping it doesn’t just delay you, it blocks your IPPT booking entirely.

What Happens If You Haven’t Completed HSP?
You simply won’t be allowed to book or attempt IPPT or NS FIT. This isn’t a soft recommendation. According to MINDEF, NSmen aged 35 and above will only be allowed to participate in IPPT or NS FIT after completing the compulsory HSP for the year and being classified accordingly.
The HSP review is initiated by your NS unit administrator once your IPPT window, meaning your birthday window, opens. You don’t need to chase this yourself in most cases, but if you’re not hearing anything and your window is approaching, it’s worth checking in with your unit rather than assuming it’ll sort itself out.

What Result Do You Need to Get Cleared?
You need a Low Cardiac Risk classification to proceed. If your result doesn’t come back as Low Cardiac Risk, you won’t be certified Fit-For-Instruction, and you won’t be cleared for IPPT or NS FIT until that’s resolved.
Once you’re cleared, your medical examination certificate is valid from the date of issue until 30 days after your next birthday, which lines up with how the IPPT window itself is structured for Army NSmen.

Is HSP the Same as the Old IPPT-FFI?
If you’ve heard older NSmen mention IPPT-FFI, or Fitness for Instruction, that’s the predecessor system. It’s now been folded into the revised HSP. If you’ve already completed your HSP for the year, you don’t need a separate FFI check, it’s covered.

How Does This Affect Your Training Timeline?
If you’re 35 or older and planning your training block, build HSP into your timeline from day one, not as an afterthought once you’re ready to book. I’ve seen trainees do 8 weeks of solid training only to find their booking blocked because HSP hadn’t cleared yet, which eats into the window they had left to test.
