Can You Retake IPPT? Rules Explained

By Adrian Tan | Last updated: August 21, 2026

Yes, you can retake your IPPT as many times as you need within your window until you reach Gold. Only your first 3 attempts count toward service pay and the annual call-up limit, and once you hit Gold, no further attempts are allowed that window.

Most of the NSmen I train assume there is a hard cap on attempts. There is not. The real limits sit around pay and timing, not around how many times you can try.

How Many Times Can You Attempt IPPT?

There is no fixed maximum. You can book and attempt IPPT as many times as needed within your window, right up until you achieve the Gold standard. After Gold, the system does not allow further attempts that window, since there is nothing left to improve toward.

This applies whether you are chasing a basic pass, working up to Silver, or pushing for Gold across several attempts. Check your current score with our IPPT calculator to see how close you are.”

How Do Extra Attempts Affect My Pay?

Only your first 3 attempts in a window count toward service pay, make-up pay where applicable, and the annual 40-day NS call-up limit. Attempts beyond the third still count toward qualifying for a higher award, just without additional pay attached.

Award payouts also work on an incremental basis rather than paying out the full amount every time you improve. This is separate from the 3-attempt pay cap above: it applies to every attempt, including your first 3. The table below shows an example of how incremental award payment works.

AttemptResultAwardPayout
3rdFailNone$0
4thPassPass with Incentive$200
5thSilverSilver+$100 (top-up to $300 total)

You are only paid the difference between award levels as you climb, not the full amount again at each stage. You are also only entitled to one Gold award per IPPT window.

Can You Retest Just One Station Instead Of The Whole IPPT?

Yes, for push-ups or sit-ups. If you fail only one of these two stations, you can retest that single station within 90 days of your original test date, or until your IPPT window ends, whichever comes first.

The 2.4km run does not qualify for a single-station retest. If your run is the station holding you back, you retake the full IPPT.

Miss the 90-day mark without passing the single station, and the single-station option closes. At that point, you are back to attempting the entire IPPT again.

What If You Choose NS FIT Instead Of Retaking IPPT Directly?

If you fail your IPPT, you are not limited to retaking it on its own. You can instead opt into the 10-session NS FIT programme, and your failed IPPT attempt counts as one of those 10 sessions automatically.

This means you only need to complete the remaining 9 sessions, not a fresh set of 10. Passing your IPPT at any point during those sessions still ends the programme early, so retaking IPPT and going through NS FIT are not mutually exclusive paths.

Are Pre-Enlistee Retake Rules Different?

Yes. Pre-Enlistees can book and retake their IPPT as many times as needed until they pass, without the same window structure NSmen operate under.

The only hard cutoff is timing: your last attempt must fall on or before the last Wednesday that is at least 14 days before your enlistment date. After that point, you enlist with whatever result you have.
