RT vs NS FIT comparison how IPPT training changed

NS FIT Explained: Sessions, Booking, and How It Replaced RT

By Adrian Tan | Last updated: August 18, 2026

NS FIT is a 10-session fitness programme that NSmen complete after failing or missing their IPPT. One of the 10 sessions is your IPPT attempt itself. Sessions run 60 to 75 minutes at a Fitness Conditioning Centre, in a park, through an HPB class, or virtually from home, and passing your IPPT at any point cancels the sessions still remaining.

I have run NS FIT sessions with NSmen who walked in expecting something closer to punishment. It is not. The structure is closer to a supervised gym programme than a remedial drill.

How NS FIT Booking Works

You can book your NS FIT sessions up to 3 months in advance through the IPPT/NS FIT eService on OneNS. The system lets you book all 10 sessions in a single login if you want your full schedule locked in early.

One rule applies across every format: leave 1 rest day between sessions. This is a safety requirement, not a suggestion, and the booking system is built around it.

You only need to attempt one IPPT within the 10 sessions. You can book and take it whenever you feel ready, including partway through the programme. Pass it, and your remaining sessions are cancelled automatically. Check exactly how many points you need with the IPPT score calculator before booking your attempt.

What Are The Ways To Complete NS FIT?

NS FIT is not limited to one training location. You choose from 4 flexible formats, plus a 5th standalone option, and each one counts equally toward your 10 sessions.

FIT@HomeVirtual, via ZoomMax 45 participants, 2+ SAF trainers monitoring

The 5th option, FIT@SAFRA Gym, works differently. It cannot be mixed with the other 4 formats above. If you choose a SAFRA gym, all 10 sessions must be completed there, since the programme is customised to your individual needs at that gym.

What Actually Happens In A Session

Every NS FIT session falls under one of five categories: Aerobic Threshold, Metabolic Circuits, Weight Loss, Sports and Games-based training, or IPPT-specific exercises. Which one you get depends on the format and location you booked.

At FIT@FCC, report 15 minutes before your session starts. The full session, including in and out-processing and a safety briefing, runs about 1.5 hours, even though the active training portion is 60 to 75 minutes.

At Bedok, Khatib, CMPB, and Kranji, weekday evening slots typically run at 1700 and 1900 hours, with additional morning and evening slots on Saturdays and Sundays. Exact slot availability shifts by centre, so confirm your specific timing on OneNS when booking.

How NS FIT Compares To The Old RT System

Before 2021, failing your IPPT meant a completely different setup. Your one-year window was split into 9 months for IPPT attempts and a final 3 months reserved for Remedial Training, known as RT.

RT itself required 20 sessions, and if you could not finish within those 3 months, you could request a 1-month extension. On top of RT, there was a separate IPPT Preparatory Training track, IPT, for those who had not yet met intermediate fitness targets.

In 2021, MINDEF folded both IPT and RT into the single NS FIT programme you see today: 10 sessions instead of 20, one unified track instead of two, and the flexibility to train at a park, at home, or through an HPB class instead of only at a Fitness Conditioning Centre, according to MINDEF’s official fact sheet.

If you have been out of NS for a few years and are hearing about RT from an older mate, this is the reason the numbers do not match what you are seeing on OneNS today.
