IPPT Cash Incentive Guide: How Much You Actually Get Paid
By Adrian Tan | Last updated: September 18, 2026
The IPPT cash incentive ranges from $200 to $500 depending on your award band, credited at least 14 days after your test date. NSmen receive it via PayNow. NSFs and Regulars get it through their monthly salary instead.
Most guides stop at the dollar amount. What actually trips people up is the mechanics: how retests are calculated, how many attempts count, and how the payment reaches you. I’ll walk through all of it below.
How Much Does Each Award Band Pay?
Quick reference before we get into the payment mechanics:
| Award | Cash Incentive | Payment Method |
|---|---|---|
| Gold | $500 | PayNow (NSmen) / Salary (NSF-Regular) |
| Silver | $300 | PayNow (NSmen) / Salary (NSF-Regular) |
| Pass with Incentive | $200 | PayNow (NSmen) / Salary (NSF-Regular) |
| Pass | Nil | N/A |
For the full breakdown of every award band, including age-band variations and elite vocation standards, see the IPPT Award Guide. This page focuses specifically on how the money moves.
How Do You Actually Receive the Payment?
The channel depends on your status, not your award band:
- NSmen: paid via PayNow, linked to your NRIC
- NSFs and Regulars: paid through your monthly salary, no PayNow option
Payment is credited at least 14 days after your test date, not immediately. If two weeks have passed and nothing has landed, check that your PayNow is correctly linked before assuming there’s an error: that’s the first thing I ask trainees to verify.
What Happens If You Retest and Score Higher?
This is the part almost nobody explains correctly. A retest does not pay out the full new amount: it tops up the difference between what you already earned and your new band.
MINDEF’s own worked example makes this clear: if your 3rd attempt fails, your 4th attempt earns Pass with Incentive ($200), and your 5th attempt reaches Silver ($300), you receive $200 for the 4th attempt and only the additional $100 for the 5th, not another full $300.
Two limits apply on top of this. You can only earn one Gold award per IPPT window: once you hit Gold, no further attempts are allowed in that window. And while you can keep attempting to qualify for a better band, only the first three attempts count toward service pay, make-up pay, and your annual 40-day NS call-up limit.
Is There a Limit to How Many Times You Can Attempt?
Not for qualifying purposes: you can keep attempting within your IPPT window to chase a better band, subject to the Gold-award and first-three-attempts rules above. What’s capped is how many of those attempts count toward service pay and the call-up limit, not how many times you’re allowed to try.
Is the IPPT Cash Incentive Taxable?
This is genuinely unclear from public sources, and I’d rather tell you that than guess. Some guides state it’s tax-exempt; MINDEF’s general position on employment-related benefits doesn’t specifically break out the IPPT award either way. If tax treatment matters for your filing, confirm directly through IRAS or your unit’s admin: don’t rely on any blog, including this one, for that specific answer.
Where to Check Your Exact Payout
Run your score through our IPPT Calculator to see which band you’re tracking toward. If you’re not sure whether you’ll land on a Pass or a Pass with Incentive, the Pass with Incentive vs Standard Pass guide breaks down exactly where that line sits. And if you’ve already hit Silver or Gold, Where to Sew Your IPPT Badge covers the uniform side of your award.
